Case Study - Corgi Gas Scheme
The Problem
In 1968, the 22-storey Ronan Point apartment block in Canning Town, London, was devastated by a massive gas blast that claimed five lives.
The Solution
CORGI was founded in 1970 as the Confederation for the Registration of Gas Installers and was given the task of ensuring that gas work was carried out safely and to a high standard. A UKAS accredited scheme was duly developed and tailored for the six registered Certified Bodies, to the needs of the consumer and industry.
To gain UKAS accredited certification under this scheme:
- Gas operatives must demonstrate gas safety competence by successfully completing nationally agreed assessments, carried out at an approved assessment centre.
- CORGI will only accept Certificates of Competence that have been issued through the certification schemes.
- Certificates of Competence are only issued by Certification Bodies that have been accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service.
- The scheme has been adopted by industry at a rapid rate with over 47,000 gas installation businesses employing approximately 98,000 gas-fitting operatives that are currently registered.
Since the introduction of this UKAS accredited scheme, there has been a significant decline in the number of fatalities resulting from gas related poisoning and explosions. Independent evaluation of this scheme by UKAS has ensured that standards have been maintained and will continue to be closely monitored.
UKAS' participation in this scheme has provides both businesses and the consumer with an informed choice relating to the competence of their supplier.
