In 1968, the 22-storey Ronan Point apartment block in Canning Town, London, was devastated by a massive gas blast that claimed five lives.
CORGI was founded in 1970 as the Confederation for the Registration of Gas Installers and was given the task of ensuring that gas work was carried out safely and to a high standard. A UKAS accredited scheme was duly developed and tailored for the six registered Certified Bodies, to the needs of the consumer and industry.

Since the introduction of this UKAS accredited scheme, there has been a significant decline in the number of fatalities resulting from gas related poisoning and explosions. Independent evaluation of this scheme by UKAS has ensured that standards have been maintained and will continue to be closely monitored.
