Professor Erika Denton is the National Clinical Director for Diagnostics at NHS England with responsibility for clinical leadership, advice and guidance across the NHS and covering all diagnostic services. Diagnostic services utilise 10% of NHS spending and over 1 billion tests are done every year in England.

In this article Professor Denton discusses the aims of the plan, the planned creation of a clinical network which will provide timely and expert radiology services and the significant changes planned for the next five years in the way in which radiology will be delivered.

Integral to the changes are the NHS England business plan (2014) which sets out targets for the system to increase the number of diagnostic services which are accredited and in imaging this means full Imaging Service Accreditation Scheme (ISAS) compliance.
