Uncertainty of Measurement: Testing

 

Aim: Any laboratory wishing to achieve accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 is required to have, and to apply, policies and procedures for the estimation, use and reporting of uncertainties of measurement for any tests or calibrations covered by their scope of accreditation. This course aims to provide delegates with an appreciation of the concept of uncertainty of measurement in a testing environment and takes delegates through the process of calculating uncertainties through a combination of lectures and interactive exercises and demonstrations
Who should attend: Any person who is, or will be involved in the estimation, use and reporting of uncertainties of measurement for testing
Duration: A two-day programme
Where: Ascot, Berkshire
Tutors: As preparation for this course delegates are required to complete a pre-course exercise. A debriefing of this exercise is undertaken on a group basis during the first afternoon of the course

Symbols and equations Part 1
Calculation of uncertainty for a test
Report back on calculation and introduction of forms for calculating uncertainties.
Example of a test with influence quantities and use of Excel for calculating uncertainties
Sources of uncertainty and their treatment

Day Two

Recap and questions
Pooled standard deviation
Exercises on uncertainty for testing and report back
Degrees of freedom and the t-distribution and worked example of a coverage factor
Symbols and equations Part 2
Effective degrees of freedom
How many measurements? 
Sampling, destructive testing, non-numeric results
Statement of uncertainty and compliance
Open session, questions, clarifications
