UKAS is seeking an experienced Operations Director from the Testing, Inspection, Certification (TIC) industry.

UKAS is the Government appointed National Accreditation Body for the United Kingdom. It is recognised and respected across the globe as a leader in the development and delivery of accreditation of testing, inspection, certification, and verification bodies.

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, this role is a member of the UKAS Board and is responsible for influencing and achieving strategic objectives within the Operations Division, whilst being accountable for creating a highly engaged performance culture and driving operational performance goals including scheduling, resourcing, productivity, customer service, quality, and technical compliance across the Operations Division.

Through the delivery of over 30,000 assessment days the Operations Division connects with every aspect of UKAS’s activities, providing the successful candidate with an unprecedent opportunity to optimise core processes and systems to shape the delivery of accreditation across the TIC sector in the UK and across the globe.

The position will be responsible for: 

  • Ensuring business strategy, objectives and targets are delivered through five Divisional Sections, including: Healthcare, Forensic Science, Engineering Construction and Physics, Agriculture, Food, Life Sciences and Asbestos, Corporate Certification and Verification.
  • Leading on the delivery of an effective resourcing strategy, to identify and address current and emerging resourcing needs through a mix of employed and contract Assessors/Assessment Managers.
  • Reviewing and optimising core operational processes and interfaces, to maximise productivity, quality, service and technical compliance.
  • Creating a culture of performance and belonging, centred around employee talent development of over 250 Assessment Managers.
  • Actively engaging with stakeholders and customers on service delivery, quality and technical matters.

Ideally you will have:

  • Evident achievement in the operational management in the TIC Sector with performance-driven, multi-site, multi-disciplined operations. With strong financial acumen in P&L budget planning and analysis.
  • Evidence of high-level technical experience from the five Sectional Divisions.
  • Outstanding operational acumen with the ability to translate process improvement and organisational effectiveness into practical delivery, from significant experience of process redesign and forming effective operational management teams.
  • Demonstrable success in turning around under-performing teams or areas of business, including evidence of developing and recommending effective business improvement initiatives.
  • Evidence of effectively contributing strategically to the future shape and direction of a business.
  • Evidence of engaging with and influencing multiple stakeholders. Adept at managing and influencing numerous, diverse senior stakeholders, often operating under tight timescales, and managing numerous priorities, from Executive, project sponsors and business leaders.
  • Demonstrable success in implementing cost control programmes and implementing rapid change in response to changes in market conditions and/or revised strategy.
  • Experience working at a senior level with strong analytical/problem-solving and planning skills.
  • Demonstrable experience of using influence to address blockers in plans.
  • Demonstrable success in people development and performance management.
  • A sound understanding of financial, contractual and risk management matters.
  • Strong, confident, and exacting writer and speaker, able to communicate your needs effectively to a wide variety of stakeholders.
