» Accreditation scheme for Imaging Services launched
05 October, 2009
The United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) has launched the UK’s first accreditation scheme for imaging services. ISAS (Imaging Services Accreditation Scheme) enables imaging services departments to achieve recognition for demonstrating that they meet the requirements of the (ISAS) Standard. This Standard, jointly developed by the College of Radiographers and Royal College of Radiologists is specifically aimed at UK organisations providing diagnostic imaging services to both the NHS and private sector. ISAS promotes best practice by comprehensively addressing patient experience, clinical effectiveness and staff safety.
UKAS has been granted a licence by Diagnostic Imaging Accreditation Ltd (DIAL) to provide assessment and accreditation services to imaging services departments wishing to participate in the scheme. A specially developed web-based assessment tool allows departments to evaluate their own performance against the Standard on a continuing basis and accreditation to the Standard will give confidence to patients, purchasers and management, by providing independent verification that the imaging service is meeting the specified requirements. This tool forms a crucial element of the assessment process and can accessed by customers at a dedicated microsite www.isas-uk.org
Copies of the ISAS Standard can be freely downloaded at either www.isas-uk.org or www.ukas.com . Organisations interested in applying for accreditation to ISAS are encouraged to read the online guidance and register for a free ISAS Preparatory Workshop. An early implementer programme commenced on 7th May 2009, and to date involves eight volunteer organisations from both the NHS public and private sector, across England and Wales. Subject to satisfactory completion of all accreditation requirements, these organisations will be the first to receive ISAS accreditation during spring 2010.
Initial feedback indicates that a large number of organisations are expected to participate in ISAS. UKAS will be very pleased to hear from radiologists, radiographers, and lay representatives interested in taking on an important role in ISAS either as an Assessment Manager or as a Professional Assessor.
