» Call for Expressions of Interest – Accreditation of Biobanks to ISO 20387:2018
30 April, 2019
The United Kingdom Accreditation Service is proposing to establish a project to develop accreditation for Biobanks to ISO 20387:2018 - Biotechnology — Biobanking — General requirements for biobanking.
This standard specifies general requirements for the competence, impartiality and consistent operation of biobanks including quality control requirements to ensure that biological material and data collections are produced and maintained appropriately. This standard is applicable to all organisations performing biobanking, including biobanking of biological material from multicellular organisms (e.g. human, animal, fungus and plant) and microorganisms for research and development. It does not apply to biological material intended for food/feed production, laboratories undertaking analysis for food/feed production, and/or therapeutic use.
UKAS intends to run a pilot programme and is inviting expressions of interest from organisations that wish to seek accreditation for this activity. We envisage that there will potentially be a broad range of different types of biobanking facilities that express an interest. Therefore, the expressions will be reviewed after the closing date and the best way forward agreed. This may mean that a phased approach for the pilot project is required depending on interest levels and type of biobanking performed.
We would also like to invite any other interested parties such as stakeholders or experts who would be interested in being involved in this project as part of the steering and technical group, or in assisting in the development and assessment process.
Those organisations that have sent an expression of interest for the pilot project will be invited to attend the meeting of interested parties where the terms of the project will be discussed along with a proposed timeline for key stages and any phased approach process that is deemed necessary.
Those who wish to express an interest to participate in the pilot programme are requested to contact Emily Robinson (DevelopmentEnquiries@ukas.com) by 31st May 2019 including the following information:
- Name of Organisation
- Whether your interest is in participation in the steering committee and/or as a potential pilot project applicant
- Status of any current accreditation or certification
- The type of biobank activity which you would be interested in being covered by ISO 20387:2018 accreditation.
Please note that submitting an expression of interest does not indicate any commitment to participate in the project on the part of the interested parties and nor does the acceptance of an expression of interest commit UKAS to accept the interested party on to the pilot project. A decision on participation will be made once applications have been received.
