» Festival of Measurement

16 August, 2018

The International System of Units (SI) is a globally agreed system of measurements that was formalised in 1960. From 20th May 2019 all SI units will be redefined using universal measurable physical constants, rather than measurement artefacts, to make measurements more accurate, standardised and reproducible across the world. To celebrate this change, the Institute of Measurement and Control (InstMC) launches the first ever national Festival of Measurement at the IMEKO World Congress in Belfast this September. The Festival of Measurement will run until World Metrology day on 20th May 2019 and aims to promote a culture of accurate measurement and raise public awareness of the importance of measurement in daily life.

As the only organisation recognised by Government to assess and accredit calibration activities in the UK, UKAS will be attending the IMEKO World Congress to support the launch and showcase the importance of accreditation. UKAS currently accredits around 360 calibration laboratories from both the private and public sectors against the requirements of ISO/IEC 17025. Accurate measurements and tests carried out in compliance with best practices and accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 can limit product failure, down time and help control manufacturing costs. In addition, when looking for a supplier, the use of accredited services can provide an invaluable tool in decision-making and risk management.
