The Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust has become the first specialist NHS diagnostic imaging service provider to be accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) to the Imaging Services Accreditation Scheme (ISAS) Standard. Their accreditation covers the organisation’s paediatric diagnostic imaging services that include: radiography; radiology, radiology nursing, ultrasound; CT; MRI; DEXA; diagnostic and therapeutic interventional radiology procedures; PACS; all delivered from its main site at Great Ormond Street.

Since 1852, the NHS Trust has been dedicated to children’s healthcare and to finding new and better ways to treat childhood illnesses. Each year over 170,000 patients visit the hospital, mainly children that are cared for and referred from other hospitals throughout the UK and overseas. The Department of Radiology performs more than 58,000 examinations per year.

To mark the Trust’s achievement, Paul Stennett, Chief Executive, UKAS formally presented Dr. Jane Collins, Chief Executive, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust with their ISAS certificate. Congratulating the staff at the Trust, Paul Stennett said: "In gaining this tremendous achievement Great Ormond Street Hospital has aptly demonstrated that it delivers on its core values to be world class, pioneering and working in partnership for the benefit of children in the UK and worldwide. As a parent, I feel that children together with their parents and carers would be reassured that the hospital volunteered to be an early adopter site and has been successful in achieving accreditation. This accreditation puts Great Ormond Street Hospital in the very prestigious family of other UKAS accredited organisations worldwide".

On accepting their ISAS certificate on behalf of the Trust, Dr. Jane Collins said: "This is a great honour for the hospital and great achievement for the imaging team who worked extremely hard to achieve it. I was personally impressed by the thoroughness and rigor of the assessment process and also the emphasis on ensuring that we were truly patient focused. I know that it has really made us refocus on the patient experience and to see our service through new eyes".

Dr. Jane Barrett, President, The Royal College of Radiologists added: “We congratulate Great Ormond Street Hospital NHS Trust on its accreditation to the ISAS Standard. It is especially rewarding to see that the fourth imaging service to be accredited is a specialist hospital. This demonstrates that ISAS is fulfilling its aim to be relevant and achievable by all types of diagnostic imaging services. We look forward to the accreditation of further departments across the UK, showing the commitment of radiology as a specialty to leading on the highest standards of service provision, a real focus on quality improvement and the core involvement of patients in the accreditation process”.

Speaking on behalf of The College of Radiographers, Richard Evans, Chief Executive commented: "The Radiology staff at Great Ormond Street have shown tremendous team work in achieving this accreditation. ISAS is professionally based and about constantly improving the services we offer. As professionals, the radiologists and radiographers here have shown that they are committed to the services they offer their patients".

Dr Melanie Hiorns, Consultant Paediatric Radiologist, who project managed ISAS with her team, concluded the speeches by adding: "We at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust are very lucky to have such a brilliant team who deliver for our patients. The department could not have achieved this award without the entire team being involved and highly committed. I would like to congratulate and thank them all".

The Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust’s ISAS award follows the successful accreditation of three other diagnostic imaging service providers.
