A new opportunity for certification bodies
UKAS is launching a pilot programme to help shape a credible, consistent and trusted route to accredited conformity assessment for Fire Risk Assessors. This is an important opportunity for certification bodies to play an active role in developing an accreditation approach that supports competence, quality and public confidence in fire risk assessment services.
With accredited certification now mandatory, UKAS is working closely with the Home Office and MHCLG to develop a robust and proportionate framework for this evolving area of public safety. The pilot will give participating certification bodies the chance to contribute practical insight, test the proposed approach and help establish a pathway that meets the needs of regulators, industry and the wider public.
What the pilot will explore
The pilot will help confirm the most appropriate accreditation criteria, including the objective, scope and assessment approach. Options currently being considered include the following IAF Level 3 standards:
ISO/IEC 17024 or ISO/IEC 17065 — to be determined
The programme may also draw on sector-specific requirements and recognised professional registration arrangements, helping ensure the final accreditation model is relevant, practical and aligned with established professional expectations.

Why take part?
By joining the pilot, certification bodies will have the opportunity to work directly with the UKAS Development Team, contribute to the shaping of the accreditation process, and gain early insight into the expectations that may underpin future accredited certification for Fire Risk Assessors.
Participants will help test how certification bodies can be assessed effectively against the relevant ISO standard and fire risk assessment criteria. Their involvement will support the creation of a clear, credible and trusted accreditation route designed to strengthen assurance, demonstrate competence and build confidence across the fire safety sector.
