Second call for expression of interest in the accreditation of Artificial Intelligence Management Systems Certification

UKAS is undertaking a project to develop Accreditation for Certification activities for the new ISO/IEC 42001 Artificial Intelligence Management System Certification standard, which was published at the end of 2023.  There are several early adopter CBs that are already part of this project.

ISO/IEC 42001:2023 is the first international standard for Artificial Intelligence Management Systems. It establishes a framework for the responsible development, provision, and use of AI. Accredited certification to this standard enables organisations to demonstrate alignment with recognised practices for trustworthy and accountable AI. For certification bodies, it introduces a new area of conformity assessment that may be relevant to clients seeking independent assurance of their AI management systems.

We are reaching out to organisations that have not already applied that may now be interested in certifying organisations against ISO/IEC 42001:2023 Artificial Intelligence – Management System.  UKAS would like to invite organisations that have such an interest to contact us to discuss next steps.

UKAS needs to undertake a robust and proportionate assessment approach to confirm the applicability of the standard.  Therefore, please could you could contact UKAS ([email protected]) by the 30 June 2025. Please could you also provide the following information:

1 . The number of clients/estimated number of clients you have for (each of) this standard?

2. The geographical location(s) where accredited certificates will be issued (solely UK, Solely Europe, Office outside of Europe)?

3. The number of non-accredited certificates issued for the standard and into which countries?

4. The date by which you envisage your clients being ready for

  • A Stage 1 audit
  • A Stage 2 audit

5. Details of how you scope the certifications and please provide some example certificates. This will assist in the development and implementation of accreditation in this potential new area.
