Supporting confidence in the nuclear supply chain
As the nuclear sector continues to grow in strategic importance, confidence in the safety, quality and reliability of its supply chain is essential. UKAS is developing its accreditation activity under ISO/IEC 17021-1 to support accredited certification to ISO 19443, the internationally recognised standard for quality management systems in the nuclear energy supply chain. The project will also consider the requirements of ISO/IEC TS 23406, helping to ensure that certification bodies working in this highly specialised sector are assessed against the relevant nuclear-specific expectations.
Associated standards
- ISO 19443:2018 — Quality management systems. Specific requirements for the application of ISO 9001:2015 by organisations in the nuclear energy sector supplying products and services important to nuclear safety.
- ISO/IEC TS 23406 — Nuclear sector requirements for bodies providing audit and certification of management systems for organisations supplying products and services.
- ISO/IEC 17021-1:2015 — Conformity assessment requirements for bodies providing audit and certification of management systems.
Current status
Accreditation under ISO/IEC 17021-1:2015 for the delivery of ISO 19443:2018 certification is now being granted on a rolling basis to successful certification bodies. This marks an important step in strengthening assurance across the nuclear supply chain and supporting organisations that supply products and services important to nuclear safety.
UKAS continues to welcome applications from organisations seeking accreditation for the delivery of ISO 19443:2018 certification. Further certification bodies are expected to join the growing number of accredited organisations, helping to build capacity, consistency and confidence across this critical sector.
