All laboratories need to have sound business processes to enable them to deliver technically sound calibrations and tests to their clients. When a laboratory is seeking to have its competence recognised through accreditation by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service, these processes must also enable the laboratory to meet the requirements of ISO/IEC 17025.
What are the benefits?
This course is designed to help delegates gain an understanding of how the business processes of their laboratory can be combined effectively with the requirements of ISO/IEC 17025, and the roles of the quality manager and technical management in this framework.
Meet the trainers
This course is delivered two of the trainers below:
Frank Smith Frank is a Building Surveyor by profession and within UKAS has the role of Operations Support Manager. He has been with UKAS for 10 years, originally as an Assessment Manager and latterly responsible for monitoring UKAS assessors to maintain their ongoing authorisations. He also provides occasional emergency cover and conducts internal audits. Prior to joining UKAS he worked as a Quality Manager in an accredited Inspection Body responsible for management, internal audit of the ISO/IEC 17020 management system and technical management of a team of asbestos surveyors. As a UKAS Assessment Manager Frank conducted assessments largely in the disciplines of asbestos testing and inspection, including as a Technical Assessor. Frank is an avid Watford FC fan and goes to most games.
George Sanders George joined UKAS in 2008 as an Assessment Manager, undertaking both the Lead Assessor role to ISO/IEC 17025, ISO/IEC 17020, ISO 17043 and Technical Assessor role to ISO/IEC 17025 for asbestos testing, becoming the UKAS technical focal person (TFP) for asbestos in 2012. Moving to his current role as Accreditation Support Manager in 2015, internal and commercial training became his ‘bread and butter’ on a day-to-day basis whilst supporting UKAS’ own audit schedule for ISO/IEC 17011 compliance and retaining the roles of Lead and Technical Assessor. Prior to joining UKAS, George worked in different roles in the commercial testing/inspection sector, before being promoted to Laboratory Manager in an ISO/IEC 17025 and ISO/IEC 17020 accredited asbestos consultancy. George holds a BSc in Physics and certificate of competence in asbestos (CoCA). George enjoys walking and a spot of DIY that’s not too challenging.
Marla Loughborough Marla is an Accreditation Support Manager and is responsible for delivering many of the commercial training courses. Having worked as a Quality Manager in an accredited Microbiology testing laboratory, Marla was responsible for maintaining and improving the ISO/IEC 17025 management system, including programming and maintaining the internal audits. She also has varied experience working within different testing environments in the USA prior to immigrating to the UK. Joining UKAS in 2011 as an Assessment Manager, Marla carried out assessments in the disciplines of food and biosciences, before changing roles to take on the responsibility of training both new UKAS recruits and external delegates in ISO/IEC 17025. Marla holds a BSc in Biology and an MSc in Medical Microbiology.
