UKAS Accreditation recognised in report on culture change in the construction sector
The Industry Safety Steering Group (ISSG), led by Dame Judith Hackitt, has issued its second report on the progress of culture change in the construction sector. The ISSG was formed by government in the wake of the Grenfell Tower tragedy to scrutinise industry proposals and monitor progress towards culture change. Its second report recognises the progress made in many parts of the industry but also challenges industry to accelerate its work to improve the safety of higher risk residential buildings in advance of the proposed new legislation.
In the report, the ISSG recognises the importance of independent assessment of the competence of those working on higher risk residential buildings and the need for third party accreditation of the organisations carrying out the assessments. UKAS is recognised in the report as one of the organisations providing leadership in the development of a more positive culture through its work with the Competence Steering Group (CSG) and many of the sectoral working groups. The CSG will be publishing its final report in the next few weeks which UKAS expects will drive the development of a number of new certification schemes in the sector.
